With private health care oppressively unaffordable, government public health institutions are not only the best option in India, but realistically, the only option for many. In fact, health emergencies are one of the most common factors of loans and debts.
This health camp, organized in collaboration with doctors of the JJ Hospital in Mumbai, was an effort to bridge the gap between #NTDNT communities (especially women) and government healthcare. This was an organised effort towards reducing the awkwardness and fear associated with healthcare (based on very real negative experiences) among indigenous communities, and an opportunity for doctors to sensitively work with them. With free blood work, thyroid checks, pap smears and other testing, as well as consultations with senior doctors of this prime government hospital in Mumbai, women and girls from Adivasi Padas and tent communities came in throughout the day.
Special thanks to Rewat Kaninde for bringing together the group of doctors and lab technicians.
