“I have made mistakes that have taken me back a few steps” is a statement of great courage, and honesty, in response to what have been any changes in self in the past one year. This is difficult for many older activists to admit oftentimes. The fact that the youth’s family stand by her, support her, are with her in her difficult times, is proof that progressive change has, in fact, taken place.
Last Sunday, we had the privilege of spending a few hours in the company of our Guts Fellows youth leaders and simply listening to their journey and experiences, on their last day of the 2024 Guts Fellowship program. Youth moving away from dogmatic, fundamentalist thought, and taking a stand to their dogmatic elders by asking them to be more mature and look at things from the minority perspective, is a small but significant step towards change… feeling positive.
